100th Day of School!

So today was finally our 100th day of school!  After several snow days, we weren't sure if it was ever going to get here! haha

So, as promised, I said I would let you know how our 100 day hats went.  In my earlier post I gave you the template for my 100 day hats.  I got the original idea from pinterest (of course!) and I added to it! I wanted the kids to show that they actually WERE 100 days smarter.

On each strip of paper the kids had to write 10 things that they had learned.  For example, one strip was 10 addition facts.  Another was 10 sight words.  In the end, they had 100 things they had learned!  The kids LOVED this!  And to my amazement, it was almost completely an independent project! WOW!  That is a difficult thing for first graders!

I don't know how your 100th day goes, but it is almost as big as Christmas in our school.  The kids came in WIRED!  When I gave them their hats, they all got so quiet you could have heard a pin drop! haha  They were concentrating so hard.  It was too cute!

Here are some pictures of our final projects!  Please excuse the rectangles...have to keep their privacy.

And of course we wrote about what it would be like if we were 100 years old!  And thanks to pinterest, I found a fun new way to do it.

Of course, we did SO much more, but it is getting late and I have had a very long day!  Until next time....

Linus and Gus

Have you met Linus and Gus yet??

I found Linus and Gus through Pinterest.  Sarah Cooley even made some cute little books and posters to teach Linus and Gus.

I made anchor charts for both Linus the Minus and Gus the Plus.

Then we discussed each of them and created our own Linus and Gus!  Aren't they cute?  The kids had such a great time with this!

Afterwards, we used our Linus and Gus people to help us with mixed addition and subtraction practice.  When given a paper with mixed problems, the kids had to go through the paper and circle all of the "Gus"es (plus signs) green and all of the "Linus"es (minus signs) red.  It helped them to distinguish between the problems!  My next step is to do something similar with word problems.  I want to have the student underline key words in either green or red.

What's in Your Heart?

I am going to try something new this year for Valentine's Day.  I have been so inspired this year by the different writing projects that I have found on Pinterest and I have to say that it has made my kids more eager to write (it is fun!).  So for Valentine's Day we are going to do a new project.  I am going to send home a heart with each student that they must fill with things that they love.  They may draw pictures, use real pictures, use words, whatever they like, to fill their heart.  Then, when they return their heart to school, the students are going to write about all of the things that fill their heart....all of the things that they love.  I made an example for them of what fills my heart:

What do you think?  We will see how it goes!
